Red Cranberry - a symbol of resistance
My mother grew about twenty Kalyna (or highbush cranberry) on her farm and we always used Kalyna berries and leaves as a remedy for cold or flu during winter months.
Not only these unique red berries have medicinal properties, but they are also symbolic to Ukrainians. Ukrainians sing songs about "Chervona Kalyna" or "Red Cranberry" during weddings or any other big celebrations.
Recently, such songs became forbidden by Russian occupiers as the song became a symbol of resistance against Russian aggression. Ukrainians who sing these songs are fined and/or jailed by Russians.
